Lura DICKINSON & Nathaniel WELCH  Family of Sullivan Township

1. Nathaniel1 Welch, son of Nathaniel Welch, (#3425) was born in Vermont? 1754. Individual flags: Rev.War. Nathaniel died 1832 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 78. His body was interred 1832 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

He married Lura Dickinson. (Lura Dickinson is #3426.) Lura was born 21 JAN 1764 in Hatfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. Lura was the daughter of Samuel Dickinson and Lucy Sawtell. Lura died 1857 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 93. Her body was interred 1857 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. If the dates of Lura are correct, she would be too young to be the mother of the older children. Possibly Nathaniel had earlier marriages.

Nathaniel was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Nathaniel was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Nathaniel, age 70-80, is shown living alone at this time although Lura was still alive. Perhaps she was away visiting at the time of the census. Lura and Nathaniel migrated to Sullivan township in 1810. He was present on the 1812 tax roll. Harriet SEYMOUR Bolt's work gives 1806/07 as the date of the migration from Vermont. Connie Wilcox of Illinois was responsible for tracing the ancestry of Nathaniel in 1991. This link had been a very difficult one for researchers to make, and we are all grateful that Connie found the missing pieces.

Nathaniel Welch had the following child: (Lura DICKINSON not old enough to be this son's mother - mother unknown)

10 ix. Nathaniel Welch Jr. (#3441) was born 1771. Nathaniel died 1839 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 67. His body was interred 1839 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Nancy Hakes BY 1811. (Nancy Hakes is #9413.) Nancy was born 1783 in New York. Nancy was the daughter of Solomon Hakes and Anna Downing. Nancy died in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age unknown. Since Nancy is of a family that settled in Columbia Township, it may give us some clues about how and why the Welch line moved to the Sullivan Township area. The HAKES records do not show a presence in Vermont, so perhaps Nancy and Nathaniel married in New York while the Welches were enroute from Vermont. Then the families of both Nathaniel and Nancy moved into the same area on opposite sides of the present Tioga/Bradford County line.

Nathaniel registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852.

Nathaniel was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Nathaniel was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Nancy and Nathaniel were 40-50 and 50-60 respectively. Their household included a female 20-30, two males 15-20, two females and a male 10-15, a male 5-10 and one under five.

He made a will 12 JUN 1839 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Wife - Nancy Welch, Sons, James, Josiah, David, Amos, Daniel,. Daus. Sally, Anna, Lucretia, Nancy Jane. Exec. James Welch, Wit. Elijah Welch, Uriah D. Welch. Is this the Nathaniel buried at State Road age 68 in 1839? Somebody's dates are wrong or his parents started having babies very, very young, particularly his mother. If those dates are correct, it would indicate that Nathaniel, Sr. may have had a first wife who was mother of Nathaniel, Jr., rather than Lura Dickenson.

Nathaniel Welch and Lura Dickinson had the following children:

2 i. Sallie2 Welch (#3443). She married Mr. ? Fairchild. (Mr. ? Fairchild is #3444.) MInnie WELCH notes no further record on Sallie.

3 ii. Samuel Welch (#3445) was born in Massachusetts 1784. Samuel died AFT 1860 at age unknown. He married Hannah Doyne 9 MAR 1806 in Royalton, Vermont. (Hannah Doyne is #3446.) Hannah was born ABT 1791. Hannah was the daughter of Francis Doyne and Betty Garvin. Hannah died ABT 1840 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age unknown.

Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Hannah and Samuel were 40-50. They had two females 15-20 and a son 10-15 in the household. Huldah and Hiram would account for two, with the second young woman unidentified. They lived between their daugher Eliza and son-in-law Arthur Goodspeed and Samuel's first cousin, Forest Ashley.

Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Hannah and Samuel had one male child under five in their household, probably a grandchild. They lived between Forest Ashley, Sam's first cousin, and Hiram Welch, their son.

He was listed as a household member of Arthur Goodspeed's house in the Census of 1860 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Arthur Sr was a farmer with real property worth $1700 and personal property worth $450. The younger Arthur was a laborer. Living with daughter Eliza in 1860. Connie Wilcox is source of some information on Samuel and Philena.

4 iii. Elijah Welch (#3447) was born in Vermont 1790. Elijah died 30 NOV 1862 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 72. His body was interred DEC 1862 in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Town, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married twice. He married Polly Spencer BEF 1814. (Polly Spencer is #18945.) Polly was born ABT 1796 in Lawrenceville, Lawrence Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. I earlier had Polly's birth as about 1805, but her tombstone indicates earlier, age 41 at deat in 1835. In this case Eleanor Boher is too young to be her mother. Polly was the daughter of Uriah Spencer and Eleanor Boher.

Polly died 09 DEC 1835 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 39. Her body was interred DEC 1835 in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Town, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. age at death 41 y on tombstone. Source of Polly's parentage is the Tioga County History (1883 or 1897)where she is listed among their children. This source is reliable as it was written from interviews of people at that time. There is a problem with the birthdate of 1805 which makes her too young for the marriage i n1814. Needs investigation. Howard L. Williams gives name as Nancy Spencer rather than Polly, but Polly's sister Nancy was married to John Maine..

He married Charlotte Bliss AFT 1840. (Charlotte Bliss reference B1.125171) (Charlotte Bliss is #3448.) Charlotte was born 07 APR 1808 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Charlotte was the daughter of Stephen A. Bliss and Charlotte Bailey. She married Charles Spencer about 1822. She married Heber Cole* after 1862. Charlotte died after 1883 at age unknown.

Elijah was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Elijah and Polly were 30-40 with two sons 15-20, a daughter and son 10-15, two daughters and a son 5-10 and two daughters and a son under five in the household.

Elijah was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Elijah's household included one female 5-10, three females 10-15, two females and one male 15-20, two males 20-30. Elijah was between 40 and 50. The household also included a woman 70-80 who was probably his mother Lura. Both Elijah and Lura were widowed at the time of this census.

In the Census of 1850, Elijah was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Elijah was a farmer with property worth $4000 which is one of the highest valuations listed on the 1850 census. Lura, called Lucy in the census, was blind. A Margaret Welch age 18 is listed. I have assumed this is the same as Maryette from the Minnie WELCH Seymour work. The three Spencer children are Charlotte's from her earlier marriage to Charles Spencer.

In the Census of 1860, Elijah was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Elijah was a farmer with real property worth $4000 and personal property worth $800. Almeda. Amanda and Mary Ellen were servants. Whose baby is eight month old Eugene? Is Mary Ellen listed in census Maryette?

5 iv. Sophia N. Welch (#3453) was born in Vermont 17 AUG 1793. Sophia died 20 FEB 1848 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 54. Her body was interred FEB 1849 in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Town, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married John L. King BEF 1811. (John L. King is #3454.) John was born 10 AUG 1787 in New York. John was the son of Simeon King and Sarah Paine. He married Elizabeth Unknown (King) AFT 1848. John died 13 JUN 1868 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 80. His body was interred JUN 1868 in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Town, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. John registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852.

John was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. John was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. John and Sophia were 40-50 and 30-40 mrespectively. They had one daughter and one son 15-20, two daughters 10-15, and one under five.

John was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The household of Sophia and John included one female 0-5, one female 10-15, one male 15-20, one male and four females 20-30. Apparently a married child with spouse and infant was living with them, probably George and Martha with infant Mary.

In the Census of 1850, John was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. John and Harry were farmers. John's property was worth $2000. Amanda Welch was counted both here and with her brother Uriah's household.

He was listed as a household member of Harry W. King's house in the Census of 1860 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Harry was a farmer with real property worth $2000 and personal property worth $300. Note: The King line of Sullivan Township is related to Joyce M. Tice through the common ancestry on the Kinne line.

6 v. Mary Welch (#3455) was born in Vermont 1797. Polly died 1851 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 54. Her body was interred 1851 in Bailey Family Cemetery, Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. I visited this site Autumn 1993 with Joan NASH O'Dell. The grave sites are full of woodchuck holes, the stones are lying down, broken, partially buried. No doubt, there are other stones here that are not identifiable. This is at the top of the hill in the pasture across the road from the house, actually in Rutland Township within a few feet of the Sullivan township line. She married Sylvester Bailey BEF 1820. I find no households in the 1820 census index labelled Sylvester Bailey. (Sylvester Bailey reference B1.125111) (Sylvester Bailey is #3456.)

Vet was born 1801 in Connecticut. Vet was the son of Constant Bailey and Abigail Unknown (Bailey). He married Mercy Newberry 1851. Vet died 1851 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 50. Historical Note: . Mill History in Sullivan Township: "In 1819 John Gray erected a saw mill at Gray's Valley, on Elk Run. He operated until 1832. It had a number of owners. In 1838 Albert Dewey erected a saw-mill in the eastern part of the township, which he and George Dewey operated for a number of years. William Young, another early mill owner, built a mill about 1832 below Mainesburg on Corey Creek, near the Richmond township line. In 1844 Valorus O. Spencer erected a mill above Mainesburg. Other early mill owners and lumbermen were: Stephen Palmer, who ran a mill in the eastern part of the township; Peleg Doud, who erected one on the South fork of Corey creek, on what is now the George Ross farm, and Sylvester Bailey, who erected one in Bailey Hollow. All these mills were run by water power, the flutter wheel being the one generally used. They have passed out of existence, except the mill near the State Road, now operated by Edward Dewey.

Vet was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Historical Note: . "In 1831 Sylvester Bailey erected a water-power grist-mill in Bailey Hollow, near Chandlersburg. About 1840 he sold it to Moses Crawford who operated it for a number of years. It shut down about twenty years ago, O. W. Palmer being the owner at the time."

Vet was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. In the Census of 1850, Vet was listed as a head of household in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Vet had his will probated 22 DEC 1851 in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. ADm. Moses Crawford. Later others appointed, Wm. A. Clark, Benjamin. W. Bailey. The Bailey property was on the boundary of Sullivan and Rutland Townships. Rutland was formed from Sullivan in 1829.

According to records of Jeanette Bailey (Rose), Sylvester had two children by mistress, Mercy Newberry, names Butler and Lafayette. Mercy lived with Sylvester's household in 1850 census. She may have been brought to the household as a "hired girl" which was the term used at the time for household employees. Mary died in 1851 and Sylvester in 1852.

7 vi. Harry Welch (#3450) was born in Vermont 16 AUG 1798. Harry died 15 MAR 1873 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 74. Their household included a daughter and a son under age five, Cytheria and William. They lived in the King Hill / State Road area of Sullivan next to her parents.

Harry was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Harry and Betsey had one female 0-5, one female 5-10, one male and one female 10-15 in their household. Sister-in-law Laura BRYANT Welch was next door.

Laura's household included one female under five, two males 5-10, one male and one female 10-15. Her husband was not present inthis census although he must have returned as they had one child after this. Laura was next door to her brother-in-law, Harry WELCH and also next door to her sister-in-law, Sophia WELCH King..

Leonard was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Laura and Leonard were 20-30 years old. They had a daughter and son under age five (Horace and Susanna). A boy 10-15 also lived with them, probably a brother of one of them.
