Betsey DOUD & Roswell WEBSTER of Sullivan Township

1. Roswell1 Webster, son of Jonathan Webster and Huldah Orvis, (#5003) was born in Sandisfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts 27 JUL 1789. Roswell died 7 MAY 1875 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 85. His body was interred MAY 1875 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

He married Betsey Doud 21 OCT 1813 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Betsey Doud is #6139.) Betsey was born 08 OCT 1795 in Hubbardton, Rutland County, Vermont. Betsey was the daughter of Peleg Doud and Isabella Rumsey. Betsey died 20 NOV 1857 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 62. Her body was interred Nov 1857 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

Roswell registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852.

Roswell was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Roswell was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Called Rozell Webster, Roswell was 40-50, Betsey was 30-40. Their children were a girl 15-20, a girl and two boys 10-15, two boys 5-10 and a girl and boy under five. No more children were born into this family after June of 1830.

Roswell was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Betsey and Roswell had one female 5-10, one male and one female 10-15, two males 15-20, two$males 20-30 in their household.

In the Census of 1850, Roswell was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The elder Roswell was a farmer with property worth $1500. The younger Roswell was also a farmer. See 1883 Tioga County History p. 30 appendix - Roswell came on foot from Massachusetts in 1812 and took up 100 acres of land in Sullivan, where he remained until 1875, when he died, aged 86.

Roswell Webster and Betsey Doud had the following children:

2 i. Amelia2 Webster (#3755) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 11 FEB 1815. Amelia died 12 JUL 1851 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 36. Her body was interred JUL 1851 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Thomas Reynolds 9 JAN 1834 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Thomas Reynolds reference LR 56) (Thomas Reynolds is #3756.) Thomas was born 25 FEB 1808 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Thomas was the son of Samuel Reynolds and Anna Mann. He married Mary Moore 10 APR 1853. Thomas died 3 OCT 1896 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 88. His body was interred OCT 1896 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Thomas was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The household of Amelia and Thomas included one male 5-10, one female 10-15, one female and one male 15-20. Both Amelia and Thomas were counted in the 20-30 category although he was older. A woman 50-60 was also in the household. It is difficult to determine who that would be as all four of their parents were living at that time, none widowed. Also their own three young children, two of whom were under five should have been listed. I need to check original census film to see if there are errors in the transcription or something misinterpreted. Original seems OK, but this does not quite fit with what we know of this family. Further investigation required.

In the Census of 1850, Thomas was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. This property was on the State Road in the 1875 School District # 4. See 1875 atlas for location. Thomas was a farmer with property worth $4000. I assume that the Anna Rowley who is in the household is Thomas' mother Anna Mann who was born in Rhode Island. Possibly she married again after her husband died in 1843.

In the Census of 1860, Thomas was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Thomas was a farmer with real property worth $4000 and personal propert worth $1000. 1897 Tioga County History p 1084 Lee Reynolds - At the time of Thomas' death, he was the oldent citizen in Tioga County at age 85. In boyhood he had no educational advantages as there were no schools at that time, but he obtained a practical knowledge of men and affairs. He possessed a wonderful memory of pioneer days and events of which his reminiscences were most interesting. He was a Democrat casting his first vote for Andrew Jackson. He was appointed Postmaster of Sullivan Post Office during VanBuren's administration, and served as constable, supervisor, and Justice of the Peace. He assisted to clear the land now embraced within the borough of Mansfield, and particularly that portion on which the bank and Hotel Allen now stand. He and his wife were members of the State Road Methodist Episcopal Church for which for which he was the first Sabbath School superintendent, and which he helped to build and maintain. For many yearshe was a class leader and steward of the church, but when his eyesight failed him, he was compelled to give up active church work. Mr. REYNOLDS was a man of progresive ideas and public spirit, upright in allthings, and respected by the leading people of his native county. Thomas died of heart trouble after an illness of seven days. Anna Rowley age 65 in household in 1850. She may be Amelia's mother. Perhaps she remarried or perhaps Amelia's name is Rowley not Webster?
