Asenath RUMSEY & Lyman SPENCER Family of Sullivan Township

1. Lyman1 Spencer, son of William Lee Spencer* and Senie Phelps*, (#5735) was born in New York 16 OCT 1796. Individual flags: Civil War. Lyman died 16 JUL 1875 at age 78. His body was interred JUL 1875 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lyman's grave has a Civil War marker, although he was older than most who fought.

He married Asenath Rumsey ABT 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Asenath Rumsey is #5734.) Asenath was born 12 JAN 1799 in Hubbardton, Rutland County, Vermont. Jean Rumsey gives Wilton, Connecticut as the probably birthplace of Asenath. Asenath was the daughter of Jeremiah Rumsey and Asenath Doud.

Asenath died 11 APR 1865 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 66. Her body was interred APR 1865 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

Historical Note: . "A grist mill was erected at Mainesburg about 1809, by Noah Rumsey, Sr. Two or three years later he sold it to Jonathan L. Spencer. In 1824 he sold his lands and mill and other personal property to John Maine, a pioneer in Lawrence township, who also bought the lands and personal property of Lyman Spencer. Mr. Maine operated the mill until 1841, when he sold it to Solon Richards, who ran it for a number of years, and sold it to R. K. Brundage, and he in turn to Philemon Doud, who tore down the old mill and erected a steam mill on its site. N. E. Calkins succeeded Doud as owner of the property, which finally passed into the hands of Hiram Horton, who leased it to Aaron Austin. On April 17, 1894 the mill was destroyed and has not been rebuilt."

Lyman registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852.

Lyman was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Historical Note: . " In 1820 Lyman and Orange Spencer were operating a distillery near Mainesburg. It afterwards became the property of John Maine, who ran it for a few years and then discontinued the business."

Lyman was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lyman and Asenath were 30-40 with two sons 10-15, two daughters 5-10 and a son and daugters under five in the household.

Lyman was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Acenath and Lyman had two males under five, one male and two females 5-10, one male and one female 10-15, two females 15-20. They were both between 40-50.

Lyman was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census in Delmar Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lyman was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Delmar Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. See County histories and Jean Rumsey for biographical information.

2 i. Carlonus2 Spencer (#5768) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 09 APR 1817. Carlonus died 17 DEC 1895 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 78. He married twice. He married Sally Canfield 10 JAN 1839. (Sally Canfield is #7981.) Sally was the daughter of Moses B. Canfield and Betsey Crippen. Sally died 17 JAN 1840 at age unknown. He married Charity Goodman* 1840/46. (Charity Goodman* is #62238.) Charity was born 19 APR 1823 in Masonville, Delaware County, New York. Charity died 27 APR 1893 in Mount Vernon,Linn,Iowa, at age 70.

3 ii. Massanello Spencer1 (#5769) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 02 JUL 1818. Massanello died 24 JUL 1819 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 1.

4 iii. Lorenzo Doud Spencer (#5770) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 16 MAR 1820. Lorenzo died 3 JAN 1896 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 75. His body was interred JAN 1896 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Lydia Jane Shaw* BY 1846. (Lydia Jane Shaw* is #52504.)

5 iv. Lorensia Spencer (#5771) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 16 AUG 1822. Lorensia died 01 JUL 1863 at age 40. Her body was interred JUL 1863 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Thomas S. Shaw* BY 1845. (Thomas S. Shaw* is #5772.) Thomas was born 1821 in New York. Thomas died 24 JAN 1890 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 68. His body was interred JAN 1890 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

6 v. Loretta Spencer (#5774) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 14 SEP 1824. Loretta died 20 JUN 1896 in Mainesburg, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 71. Her body was interred JUN 1896 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Argalus Ford 27 AUG 1841 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Argalus Ford is #5773.) Argalus was born 22 FEB 1820 in New York. Jean Rumsey gives Smithfield, Bradford County, PA as possible alternative birthplace. Argalus was the son of Joseph Ford and Amanda Rumsey.

Argalus died 21 MAR 1897 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 77. Argalus died at the Wellsboro County House.

His body was interred MAR 1897 in Mainesburg Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

7 vi. Alanson Spencer (#5775) was born in Mainesburg, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 19 OCT 1826. Alanson died 28 JUL 1916 at age 89. His body was interred JUL 1916 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Catherine Samantha Hiltbold 2 JAN 1853 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Catherine Samantha Hiltbold is #53157.) Catherine was born MAR 1836. Catherine was the daughter of Henry Hiltboldt* and Phoebe Furman*. Catherine died 1918 at age 82. Her body was interred 1918 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Alanson lived in Wellsboro, PA.

8 vii. Cansonetta Spencer (#5776) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 23 NOV 1828. Cansonetta died 18 FEB 1903 at age 74. Her body was interred FEB 1903 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Cansonetta or Canzonette is buried with her parents. She married Gen. George Kress 10 JUL 1851 in Knoxville, Deerfield Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Gen. George Kress is #5777.)

George was born ABT 1806 in New York. George was the son of Jacob Kress*. He married Lucinda Unknown (Kress) BY 1832. George died BEF 1897 at age unknown.

9 viii. Lyman Almandus Spencer (#5778) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 15 MAR 1830. Almandus died 28 MAY 1918 in Delmar Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 88. His body was interred MAY 1918 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Armenia Borden 1850/54. (Armenia Borden is #62239.) Armenia was born 19 NOV 1836 in Pennsylvania. Armenia was the daughter of Ansel Borden* and Anna Hardy*. Armenia died 20 NOV 1881 at age 45. Her body was interred NOV 1881 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

10 ix. Aseneth Leonora Spencer (#5779) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 15 FEB 1832. Aseneth died 19 MAY 1890 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 58. Her body was interred MAY 1890 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Abiathar Swope NOV 1852. (Abiathar Swope is #5780.) Abiathar was born 1829 in Herkimer County, New York. Abiathar was the son of Ezra Swope* and Catherine VanValkenburgh*. Abiathar died 1899 at age 70. His body was interred 1899 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Abiathar and Asenath are buried with his parents.

11 x. Brittana A. Spencer (#5781) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 3 MAR 1834. Individual flags: Obituary. Brittana died 12 JUL 1907 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 73. Wellsboro Agitator, Wed. July 17, 1907 : Mrs. Robert E. Pond, aged 73, died of cancer of the stomach at her home on Sears Street last Friday evening about 7:50 o'clock after a long illness. Her maiden name was Britanna A. Spencer, daughter of Lyman and Asenath Spencer, deceased, and she was born in Sullivan County, Pa. on March 3, 1834. She was the last daughter of a family of eleven children, four brothers surviving her - Messrs. Alenson & James C. Spencer. both of Wellsboro, and Almandus and Massanello Spencer, both of Delmar Township.

On June 12, 1853, she was married to Mr. Robert E. Pond, of Wellsboro and spent the remainder of her life in this immediate vicinity, excepting two years residence in Iowa. They returned from that state about 39 years ago.

Besides her husband, two of her seven children survive, Mrs. Eugene Burdette Pond of Sturrock Street and Mrs. Benj. C. Hymes of Philadelphia. Mrs. Pond was a charter member of the First Baptist Church and was beloved by all who knew her. Funeral Services were held on Sunday at 3 P.M., Rev. R. M/ Cloud. Rev. Claude C. Langford, Pastor of the First Baptist Church was unable to preach due to illness. Her body was interred 14 JUL 1907 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. She married Robert Emmett Pond 12 JUN 1853 in Holiday or Holidaytown, Middlebury Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Robert Emmett Pond is #5782.)

Robert was born 26 APR 1832 in Greene, Chenango County, New York. Robert was the son of Hiram Pond and Lydia Cleveland. Robert died 30 OCT 1908 at age 76. Wellsboro Agitator Wed. Nov. 4, 1908 - Mr. Robert Emmet Pond, aged nearly 77, died Friday evening at 7 o'clock of inflammation of the bladder after an illness of about five weeks. He was born April 26, 1832, in Greene, Chenango County, NY and came to Wellsboro to reside when he was a young man. On June 12, 1853 he married at Holiday, Tioga County, Miss Brittana A. Spencer, who died on July 12, 1907. Seven children were born to them only two of whom are living - Mr. Eugene B. Pond of Wellsboro and Mrs, Minnie Hymes of Muncy, Pa. widow of the late Benjamin C. Hyme, formerly of this borough. One sister, Mrs. Martha M. Lamb, who resides in the west, also survives him. Three of the children died of smallpox while Mr. Pond was at the front during the Civil War.

Mr. Pond enlisted in Co. A 149th Reg't Pa. Volunteers and served for three years. He was twice wounded, in the Battle of the Wilderness being shot through the legs.

The funeral was held at the First Baptist Church on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. C. G. Langford officiating, burial in the Wellsboro Cemetery. The services at the grave being in charged of George Cook Post, G.A.R.

His body was interred 2 NOV 1908 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Robert served in the military 08 AUG 1862 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Robert's parents were from Poultney, Vermont. Robert served in the Civil War in Co. A, 149th Regt. Pa. Vol.

The Pond Genealogy lists three children, Adda Jane, George Byron, and Frank M. with no birthdates, but with deathdates of 27 Jan 1863 for Adda and 01 Feb 1863 for George and Frank. Jean Rumsey does not include these children in her work.

12 xi. Massanello Spencer2 (#5783) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 14 MAY 1836. Massanello died 07 APR 1928 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 91. My records have death in 1928, but cemetery inscription in Rhoda Ladd cemetery list indicates death in 1936 at age 100. Verify which is correct. Jean Rumsey gives death as 1928 but notes the inscriptionon the grave stone / or cemetery list. His body was interred APR 1928 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Adelia Elizabeth Swartwood* BY 1858. (Adelia Elizabeth Swartwood* is #57223.)

Adelia was born 18 OCT 1842 in VanEtten, Chemung County, New York. (Additional notes for Adelia Elizabeth Swartwood* ) Adelia died 26 MAY 1919 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 76. Her body was interred MAY 1919 in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Massanello and Adelia lived in Delmar Township, Tioga County, PA.

13 xii. James Cudworth Spencer (#5784) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 6 NOV 1839. James died 20 JUL 1914 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 74. He married twice. He married Mary P. Hiltbold 8 NOV 1862 in Delmar Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Mary P. Hiltbold is #5785.) Mary was born 05 MAY 1841 in Delmar Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Mary was the daughter of Jacob Hiltbold* and Abigail Johnson*. Mary died 15 FEB 1908 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 66. He married Margaret Broughton 21 JUL 1909 in Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Margaret Broughton is #5786.) Margaret was born JUN 1842. Margaret was the daughter of Uriel Broughton* and Margaret Unknown (Broughton). She married George Jennings* ABT 1863. Her body was interred in Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Margaret is buried with her first husband, George Jennings.
