Lydia DRINKWATER & Samuel CUDWORTH Family of Sullivan Township

1. Lydia1 Drinkwater * (#11653) was born 1793. While others of the Drinkwater family settled in Sullivan, I have not found Lydis'a link to them. Can you help?

She married Samuel Cudworth BEF 1808. (Samuel Cudworth is #6794.) Samuel was born 1792 in Ward, Massachusetts. Samuel was the son of Paul Cudworth and Sarah Drinkwater. Samuel died 1836 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 44. Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lydia and Samuel were 30-40 and lived next door to Samuel's brother, James. They had four children. The death of both Samuel and his brother James in 1836 left the two women with large and young families to raise alone. Cudworth Genealogy page 98

Lydia was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lydia's household had one female 5-10, one female 10-15, one female 15-20, and one male under five.

In the Census of 1850, Lydia was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lydia's property was worth $600. Samuel is listed here and with his sister Susanna's household (Household 121).

Lydia Drinkwater* and Samuel Cudworth had the following children:

2 i. Plinney2 Cudworth (#49650) was born BEF 1820. He married Lydia Golding. (Lydia Golding is #62356.) Lydia was the daughter of Ephraim Golding* and Lydia Pond.

3 ii. Susannah Cudworth (#3464) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 1822. Individual flags: Newspaper. Susannah died 6 OCT 1876 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 54. Mansfield Advertiser 25th Oct 1876: Died Mrs. Susanna Welch age 50 years in Sullivan Oct. 6th. She married Josiah Welch BEF 1847. (Josiah Welch is #3463.)

Josiah was born 1817 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Josiah was the son of Nathaniel Welch Jr. and Nancy Hakes. Josiah died 1883 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 66. Newspaper 1883: Mainesburg Items -
We just heard that Joshua WELCH is dead. He has been a long sufferer, another good citizen has left us, he was a kind parent, and will be much missed by many friends.

Josiah was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Josiah's family was next door to brother James, also near the Enos & Emalin Rose family. Josiah, Volney and Willy were farming. Julia kept house. Lydia & Stella were teachers, and Lilly and Addie attended school.

4 iii. Mary Cudworth (#19044) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 1833. She married Rufus Bartlett*. (Rufus Bartlett* is #49651.)

5 iv. Samuel Drinkwater Cudworth (#11721) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 20 SEP 1836. Samuel died 13 JUL 1924 in West Plains, Howell County, Missouri, at age 87. He married Ella Jane Frost 08 Sep 1867 in Sylvania, Columbia Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. (Ella Jane Frost is #11722.) Jennie was born 25 DEC 1845 in Covington Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Jennie was the daughter of Lyman Luke Frost and Hannah Ufford. Jennie died 02 Apr 1917 in Bolivar, Polk County, Missouri, at age 71. Her body was interred Apr 1917 in Bolivar, Polk County, Missouri. Samuel was born several weeks after the death of his father. His mother, Lydia, managed to keep the family together. Samuel was in the household of his sister Susannah who had married Josiah Welch in the 1850 census. He was also listed in the household of his mother in 1850. It was not unusual at that time to count people twice if they were in different households on different days. However, it does seem odd that since the whole township was counted by one person, that person did not remember seeing someone just a few days previously in another household. Apparently they were not instructed to not double count. Sam and Jennie moved to Hamilton, Caldwell, Missouri shortly after they married arriving there 24 March 1868. They moved to Mound District 12 April 1870 and they lived there until 1910 when they moved to St.Cord, Florida because of Jennie's poor health. They returned to Bolivar, Missouri where she died 2 April 1917, and she was buried there. Samuel died at the home of his daughter, Eva May. He had been a soldier in the Civil War as a private in Company E, 210th Pennsylvania Infantry and in Company C 171st Infantry for which he drew a pension. From Cudworth Genealogy, p. 148.
