Elizabeth WORDEN & David CRIPPEN  Family of Sullivan Township

1. Elizabeth1 Worden, daughter of Isaac Worden and Margaret Gray, (#7945) was born 1787. Elizabeth died 19 MAR 1842 in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 54.

She married David Crippen BEF 1804. (David Crippen is #7731.) David was born MAY 1785 in Alford Township, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. David was the son of Roswell Crippen and Sarah Griffis. He married Sophronia Rose 1844. David died 3 APR 1858 in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 72. His body was interred APR 1858 in Crippen Cemetery, Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. David was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census in Rockland, Sullivan County, New York. Elizabeth and David were next door to her parents in this census.

He migrated from Rockland,Sullivan County NY to Tioga County, PA 1814. Elizabeth and David followed her sister Annis and her husband, Jesse Smith, to the area that later became Sullivan Township, Tioga County and then still later became Rutland Township, Tioga County PA. They already had a large family of small children who accompanied them.

David registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852.

David was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. David registered to pay taxes 1829 in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Rutland Township was formed From Jackson and Sullivan in 1828. William Howland, William Rose and Ezra Wood performed the first tax assessment.

David was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. In the Census of 1850, David was listed as a head of household in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Youngest sons, John and Charles were in the household with David and Sophronia this year.

David had his will probated 19 MAY 1858 in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Widow, S. Crippen; Adm. George P. Crippen, Daniel Crippen, Hiram Hodges. Bail - Asa Crippen. See also John Crippen page 214 Tioga County 1897 History. Same age but born in different place. See N.Y. Genealogical & Biographical Records. Vol. 88, pg. 161. June 1957 from a letter by David reviewing what genealogy he knew about his family. Says he married Sophronia in the sixtieth year of his life. That being the case, she was fifty five and not likely to have three children after that.. David lists the last three daughters with his wife Elizabeth, not with Sophronia, which is certainly more likely. Based on that, I will move them. David is specific that he had eight sons and seven daughters with Elizabeth. Earlier reference attributing the last three daughters to Sophronia is obviously wrong. David migrated to Rutland Township with his first wife, Elizabeth WORDEN, in 1814. They settled adjacent to Elizabeth's sister, Annis WORDEN, and her husband Jesse SMITH. This is in the area where the Crippen Cemetery remains in its abandoned and uncared for state.

She migrated from Rockland,Sullivan County NY to Tioga County, PA 1814. In the Census of 1850, Roswell was listed as a head of household in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Roswell was a farmer with property worth $700. Reuben was 33, Julia was 28 and Rebuen was age 9. I have him in the database as Reuben Crum, son of David Crum and Elizabeth Holton. They lived adjacent to Andrew Roblyer and Hiram Soper.

Orinda was very young at the time of this marriage, but the biography of Hiram indicates marriage in 1830 and the 1840 census still has Orinda as under 20. I suspect that the marriage date is wrong. (Hiram Hodges is #9551.)
