Rebecca PITTS & Simeon BRIGGS, Jr.  of Sullivan Township

1. Simeon1 Briggs Jr., son of Simeon Briggs, (#7740) was born in Freetown, Bristol County, Massachusetts 1777. Simeon died 1859 in Vinton County, Ohio, at age 82.

He married Rebecca Pitts. (Rebecca Pitts is #40591.) Rebecca was born 1787 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Rebecca was the daughter of Ebenezer Pitts and Lydia Cudworth. Rebecca died 30 Jul 1869 in Vinton County, Ohio, at age 82.

Simeon registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852.

Simeon was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. They were next door to her brother, Hanover Pitts. Simeon and Rebecca lived in Rutland County Vermont until 1817 when they moved to Sullivan Township. About 1821 they moved on to Brown Township, Vinton County, Ohio. She is sister to Hanover Pitts, another early Sullivan settler, and they are part of the major move from Vermont to Sullivan with relatives such as Cudworth, Briggs, Pitts, Rumsey, Doud, etc. Reynolds and Benson also moved from Rutland County, Vermont, bringing their county name to transplant in Rutland Township.

Simeon Briggs Jr. and Rebecca Pitts had the following child:

2 i. James2 Briggs (#40592) was born in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania 11 SEP 1817. James died in Vinton County, Ohio, at age unknown. He married twice. He married Lucinda Tinkham* JUN 1842. (Lucinda Tinkham* is #40593.) Lucinda was born 1814. Lucinda died 1869 at age 55. He married Permelia Unknown (Gould Briggs) 15 FEB 1871 in Vinton County, Ohio. (Permelia Unknown (Gould Briggs) is #40594.) James and his wives owned 318 acres of farmland in Vinton County, Ohio where James had moved at age four with his parents.
