Hannah BABCOCK & Josiah DEWEY  Family of Sullivan Township

1. Josiah1 Dewey, son of Josiah Dewey and Huldah Frost, (#7890) was born in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut 18 SEP 1767. Josiah died 10 FEB 1846 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 78. His body was interred FEB 1846 in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Town, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

He married Hannah Babcock * BEF 1788. (Hannah Babcock* is #7891.) Hannah was born 2 SEP 1766 in Connecticut. Hannah died 4 JUN 1839 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 72. Her body was interred JUN 1839 in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Town, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

Josiah registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852.

Josiah was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Josiah was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Josiah and Hannah were both 60-70 and living with no other household members. Source of birthplace of Josiah and Hannah is James B 1880 census record. Harding Genealogy page 108 says James Babcock is seventh generation from Thomas Dewey also found in Dewey Family History

Josiah Dewey and Hannah Babcock* had the following children:

2 i. Joseph2 Dewey (#13265) was born in Cambridge, Washington County, New York 20 FEB 1788. Joseph died 6 NOV 1833 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 45. Tombstone says 53 years at death, but 1790 birthdate gives 43 years. His body was interred NOV 1833 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Rebecca Unknown (Dewey) BY 1815. (Rebecca Unknown (Dewey) is #13973.)

Joseph registered to pay taxes 1816 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the northern part of Ward which was formed in 1852.

Joseph was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Joseph was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Rebecca and Joseph were 30-40 and 40-50 respectively. Their household included four sons and a daughter.

Joseph had his will probated 25 SEP 1834 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Adm. Josiah S. Dewey, David Hazard. Bail Wm. B. Mann, Sylvester Bailey 2nd. Widow not named.

3 ii. Sarah Dewey (#13979) was born in Cambridge, Washington County, New York 1 JUL 1789.

4 iii. Isaac Sheldon Dewey (#13980) was born in Cambridge, Washington County, New York 12 MAR 1792. Isaac was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Isaac and his wife lived next door to his sister Huldah. They were 30-40 and 20-30 years old. They had two daughters 5-10 and two sons and a daughter under five.

5 iv. Huldah Dewey (#11307) was born in Feeding Hills, Hampden County, Massachusetts 17 JUL 1798. She married James Calkins. (James Calkins is #11306.) James was born 1780-1790. James was 40-50 in 1830. James was the son of Moses Calkins and Thankful Stevens*.

James died in Wells Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, at age unknown. James was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Huldah and James were 30-40 and 40-50 respectively. They lived next door to her brother, Isaac Dewey. They had a daughter 10-15, a daughter and son 5-10 and two sons under five years of age. Do not know where Huldah fits, but have placed her here. page 247 of Pioneer and Patriot Families of Bradford County described her as of Sullivan when she married James Calkins.

6 v. Sanford Smith Dewey (#13982) was born in Feeding Hills, Hampden County, Massachusetts 5 JUL 1800.

7 vi. Josiah F. Dewey Jr. (#13983) was born in Feeding Hills, Hampden County, Massachusetts 11 JUN 1802. Josiah was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Called Josiah Duey, Jr. in this census, he was 20-30 years old with wife 20-30 and two daughters under age five. This fits with family also found in Sullivan in 1840.

Josiah was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. This is the only Josiah Dewey in the database that fits the age group given. None of the resources I have used so far detail him. The household included Josiah and wife and two males under 5, one male and one female 5-10, and two females 10-15. Needs further investigation.

8 vii. James Babcock Dewey (#5858) was born in Feeding Hills, Hampden County, Massachusetts 19 JAN 1805. James died 14 JAN 1895 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 89. His body was interred JAN 1895 in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Town, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He married Asenath Harding 1824 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. (Asenath Harding is #5857.) Asenath was born 13 OCT 1806 in Brookfield, Vermont. Asenath was the daughter of Samuel Harding and Love Mayhew. Asenath died 11 JUN 1886 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 79. Her body was interred JUN 1886 in King Hill Cemetery, Sullivan Town, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Mansfield Advertiser 23 Jun 1886 - Mrs. J. B. Dewey died Sullivan twp. Jun 11th, born Oct 13th 1806 and had 11 children, 7 left.

James was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Called James. B. Duey was 20-30. Asenath listed in the 30-40 age category which is in error. One daughter 5-10 and two boys under five were in the household.

James was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Asenath and James had one female under 5, two males 5-10, two males 10-15 in their household.

In the Census of 1850, James was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. James was a farmer with property worth $1000.

In the Census of 1860, James was listed as a head of household in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. James was a farmer with personal property worth $1750. Fanny was a seamstress listed under her birthname rather than a married name (Rumsey). Solon was a farm laborer. Sullivan Census 1850 D 189 1860 D 1150 1870 D 85 1880 D 73
