July 2007 - A special note from a site visitor.
Dear Ms Tice
My name is John D.Secor
I am 91 years old and born Oct, 30 1916 I would like to thank
you for all the things I have learned regarding the history of Towanda
Pa . I was born 1916 my Mother died 8 days after my birth. I was born at
the corner of Bridge Street and Charles St. My Mother`s name was Regina
White wife of George Willard Secor, he was a member of the Masonic order
,he died Dec 1918,I lived for short time at 20 Williams St and then 108
Williams St until a little while after 1926.From there with my Grandfather
we moved out to Liberty Corners. A little information that you may be interested
in is that my aunt, Mary White Cook and her husband James owned a restaurant
and a taxi cab company on main street and Ed White owned a Grocery store
across the street. The restaurant was two doors north of the Kauffman House
Hotel. My grandfather, John Charles White was a blacksmith for the Lehigh
Valley railroad and had his shop not far the Towanda train station at North
Tow. I can remember the raging waters in the spring swelling , animals
the river carrying chicken coops, sheds barns boats trees and all sort of
articles. I can remember when the water was so high it ran into the first
floor of the Courthouse, I remember times in the summer you could walk
across the river to the island that was about 3 or 4 hundred yards from
River bank, and I played in the town band and were playing at the ball
ground that was located at the east end of the Bridge street when the King
and Queen of Siam made an appearence, I believe the Kaufman family of Towanda.south
I am not positive but I am quite sure that Mr,Kaufman was the Ambasssador
of that country.Well I had better shut down because I could write a book
about Bradford Co.and Sullivan Co, most of my mothers The White
name came from Sullivan Co.off springs of John Charles White my grand father
I want to thank you again for all the information and great work you have
done on putting this all on the net work for us to dream of what took place
a long time ago. You made my life much fuller than I ever expected
to be. I just can't thank you enough.
John Donald Secor |
