145 Years of History … The Troy Gazette Register has had many names during its 145-year history. A few of those mastheads are shown below. Here is a brief resume of the newspapers which have become part of the history of the Troy Gazette-Register: The Troy Times – September 24, 1863, edited

The Troy Gazette, edited by D. W. Case and then Frank E. Van Keuren, who became sole owner in early 1905.
The Weekly Register appeared October 25, 1881, owned and edited by Frank Loomis. It changed its flag and format soon after, becoming the Troy Register.
The Troy Register was sold by the Loomis estate in December 22, 1904, Coles & Van Keuren, purchasers. The two weeklies were then merged into
The Troy Gazette-Register, January, 1905, with F. E. Van Keuren as editor until June 1, 1926 when he died and his son Ralph H. Van Keuren became editor.
Ralph Van Keuren died August 22, 1951, and his wife, Mary and son, Ralph,
Jr. ran it until selling to C. Dixxon Avery on January 1, 1953.
C. Dixxon Avery, and his wife Frances, owned and operated the Troy
Gazette-Register, until his death January 14, 1986. During their ownership,
the newspaper was incorporated and a printing business, Bradco Printers,
was added.
Michael S. Polly and Ronald E. Pine, shareholders and long-time employees of the Averys’ eventually became the new owners. Following Mr. Polly and Mr. Pine’s retirement, Thomas E. Pine and Kathleen Pine Close, took over the business in 1994. Which brings us to present day and the new owners, effective October 16, 2008, John and Lois Shaffer of Canton, PA. |
