Do You Know that you can search just the Obituaries on the site by using the three County Specific Obituary selections in the Partitioned search engine at the bottom of the Current What's New Page? You can narrow your search by including a key word in the cemetery name or a township name in addition to the surname you search. Then select the Find All Words option.
You'll also find obituary and other newspaper clippings using Clippings partition. Additional clippings can be found in the Birth, Marriage, and some other partitions.

Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business.

All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and  for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. Tice (JoyceTice@aol.com)

EDWARD PAUL SCHWENKLER died Thursday, 14 July 2016, surrounded by his family after a short bout with cancer. Born 25 July 1932 in Elmira, Edward was the youngest of six children born to Anthony Alphonse Schwenkler and his wife, Frances M. Przybylski. His father was a chemist and a teacher of sciences for more than three decades at Elmira Free Academy. Edward grew up on Grove Street in Elmira and attended Elmira Catholic grammar schools and Elmira Free Academy. He served as a pilot in the United States Air Force and later received his B.S. in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University and his M.S. in Ceramic Engineering from Ohio State University. Ed followed his father's footsteps in becoming a science teacher in the Elmira City School District and over the course of three decades taught at Ernie Davis Junior High, Elmira Free Academy and Southside High School. He was well-loved by his students for his humor and his unorthodox and occasionally perilous teaching methods. However, his interest in matters scientific ranged far beyond his work and neither the stars in the sky nor a curious rock could escape his scrutiny. From a young age Ed displayed a love of aviation. He started building balsa gliders as a boy and soon grew to piloting sailplanes at Harris Hill. He was a long-time member of the Harris Hill Soaring Club, introduced many a person to the wonderful world of soaring, and served as an instructor at the Schweitzer Soaring School. His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, picked up his love of soaring and is known internationally as a competitive sailplane pilot. Ed was an exceedingly ambitious gardener of vegetables and lover of plants in general, particularly cacti, and his home was populated with a small jungle of exotic flora. He was very athletic right to his last years, walking several miles every day and playing tennis at every opportunity. Ed and his wife Janet were devout members of their Church community and were mainstays of the late night shift at St. Casimir's Divine Mercy Chapel in Elmira. On 29 August 1959, Edward married Janet Therese Michel, daughter of Paul D. Michel, Esq., and Esther W. Kent of Marion, Ohio. She lives on with wonderful memories of his 57 years of devotion. They raised five children in Elmira with great love and attention, all of whom survive: Anne (Kevin) Ward of Panama City, Florida; Sister Marie Christine ("Mary") of the Poor Clare Colettine Sisters in Rockford, Illinois; John E. Schwenkler, Esq., of Elmira; Paul A. Schwenkler of Herndon, Virginia; and Elizabeth (Thomas) Geiger of Bissingen an der Teck, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Ed is survived by four grandchildren, Michael Ward (and his very special wife Alina), David Ward, Rebecca Geiger, and Rachel Geiger, and a great grandson, Erik Ward; sisters Mary Cain and Jean Garvey; countless nieces, nephews and cousins. Ed was a genuinely kind, unassuming, and generous man, who would help anyone in need. He was a friend to the elderly and infirm across the county and could be found quietly delivering his home-cooked soups to those no one else found time for. He visited those that few visited and attended their funerals when few others did. He did these things because they came naturally to him. Family and friends are invited to Kalec Funeral Home between 8:00 AM and 9:15 AM today, Saturday 16 July 2016. A prayer service there at 9:15 AM, followed by his Mass of Christian Burial in St. Casimir's Church at 10:00 AM. Burial to follow at Sts. Peters & Paul's Cemetery. The family wishes to extend its sincerest thanks to the staff at the Chemung County Nursing Facility for their immense compassion and diligent care of Ed during his brief stay there. Those wishing may make a donation in Ed's name to the Adoration Chapel, C/O 1010 Davis Street, Elmira, NY. –Elmira Star-Gazette 7/16/2016

SHON - Joseph E. Shon, Age 94 of Troy, Pa., formerly of Elmira, N.Y. died at his home on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009 after a period of declining health. He was born on July 2, 1915 in Renovo, Pa. to Francis and Ella (ANTEL) Shon.  His early years were spent in Renovo, and he attended college at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pa. Sept. 12, 1940 he enlisted in the Army Air Force, and went to aircraft mechanic school before being sent to Coolidge Field on Antigua (British West Indies) and Losey Field in Puerto Rico, where he was radio operator on B-25 bombers. While on furlough back in the United States he married Rita Ellen HUGHES on April 18, 1944 at St. Joseph Church in Renovo, and they began their life together. After discharge in 1945, as a sergeant, they lived in Rapid City as civilians and came East, finally settling in Elmira in 1946 to raise a family that included seven children around the dinner table. Joseph's life always was centered around his family and his faith, with little time for socializing. The majority of his years he worked at Schweizer Aircraft, always coming right home to his home and family, and spending time either with them or tinkering in his cellar workshop on whatever needed done. His time with Rita ended at her death in July 1979, and the years that followed were lonely ones, in spite of his children's efforts. A lifelong friend, Margarita Pedraja filled that loneliness with her quick smile, and on April 26, 1997 they exchanged wedding vows at a large ceremony in Peekskill, N.Y. with family and friends in attendance and amazement. Joe's remaining time with "Daisy" was spent between living in Cape Coral for two years and then moving to their home in Troy, where he resided until his death.  In addition to his wife Margarita he is survived by a brother Edward Shon; and sisters Helen and Agnes Shon, all of Elmira; six children and their spouses, Frances Marie Given of Atlanta, Ga., Theresa "Terri" (Dennis) Kelley of Troy, Robert (Nancy) Shon of Fair Haven, N.Y., Mary (Joseph) Wallitt of Elmira, Maureen (Randy) Brimmer of Painted Post, and Michael (Katherine) Shon of Brighton, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.  He was predeceased by his wife Rita, his son, Kenneth Shon and brothers, William Shon and Thomas Shon and grandson Alan Kelley.  Family and friends are invited to call from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 19, 2009 at the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., 110 West Main Street, Troy, Pa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20. 2009 at St. John's Catholic Church, Exchange & High Streets, Troy, Pa., with Reverend Martin Boylan as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery, Elmira, N.Y. In lieu of flowers memorials are directed to Feed the Children, P.O. Box 36, Oklahoma City, OK 73101, American Cancer Society, 1948 E. 3rd Street, Williamsport, PA 17701 or to St. John's Catholic Church, 24 N.
