Lena Hakes taught school in Towanda as well as in Mosherville and other
places. She was first cousin to my grandfather, Lee. D. Tice. Lena's parents
were Leticia Tice and Willis Hakes. Lena lived from 1887 to 1939, and she
married Tracy Everitt. A couple of boxes of her postcards and photos
came to me in an unusual way. Some of Lena's family had moved to Florida
and apparently some of her items were with them. In 1999 a person in Florida
bought the boxes of her "stuff" for $1. He contacted Phil Green who has
a web page on the Everitt Family and sent the box to him. When Phil realized
that Lena was cousin to my grandfather, he turned it all over to me, and
no one could appreciate it more. It includes postcards to Lena from my
grandfather and his siblings teasing her about her boyfriend, Tracy. It
includes three of the souvenir booklets and at least two school photos
with Lena as teacher. They are undated, but assumedly match with the booklets,
although I can't say which photo matches which year. I already had
photos of Lena in my grandfather's collection. She is recognizable in any
photo at any stage of her life from infancy on, by her unusual and distinctive
eyes. The collection also includes a photo I take to be the Teacher's Institute
held at Towanda as I have postcards she and Tracy exchanged about that.
Tracy was also a teacher. |
