There was one township in 1800 in present Tioga County, which was then part
of Lycoming County.
|
The twelve enumeration categories were comprised of:
Free white males under age ten
Free white males of age ten and under age sixteen
Free white males of age sixteen and under age twenty six
Free white males of age twenty six and under age forty five
Free white males over age forty five
Free white females under age ten
Free white females of age ten and under age sixteen
Free white females of age sixteen and under age twenty six
Free white females of age twenty six and under age forty five
Free white females over age forty five
Other free persons, except Indians, not taxed

| Demographic Analysis from Joyce
Of the 509 persons in the area, 269 or 53 % of them were under the age of 16.
This is consistent with my analysis of the 1840 population of Sullivan Township
where the median age of the population was fifteen. This yields 2.7 children per
household which is not a large number for the era. The skewing of the age
average results as much from the absence of those over age 45 as from the
large number of those under 16. In 1800 only 8.6 % of the population exceeded
the age of 45. This was a new settlement of young families. |
