Lee Dewitt Tice

1936

In 1936, Lee Tice lived on his farm in Sullivan Township with his second wife, Ella Marshall, and his two sons from his first marriage to Mildred Mudge, Homer and Leslie. His diary sticks pretty close to home reviewing the farm chores that he does. He tells us every day what time he got up, what time he went to bed and what the temperature and weather were. The main activities for this year were building a large two storey chicken barn and the insatallation of electricity to this very rural area for the first time. The routine of farming is broken only by an occasional social event or visit from relatives or friends. Compare this to the much more detailed diary of Eugene Crippen who lived just to the north in Roseville in the same year.

November 26, 1936	Thursday - 5:15 A.M. - Clear - Banked Hen House. Went up to Earl’s for Thanksgiving. Mother & Aunt Maude & Bertha were there. 8:20 P.M.
November 27, 1936	Friday - 5:20 A.M. - Clear & Cold Wind. Maybe it froze up. Pacjed eggs & odd jobs. 7:40 P.M.
November 28, 1936	Saturday - 5:30 A.M. - Cloudy, Cold Wind. 16 above Zero - Went to Mansfield. Got stove going in Chicken coop. Odd job (Warmer) 8 P.M.

December 3, 1936	Thursday - 5:08 A.M. - Clear. 32 above. Packed eggs, 3 Cases. Odd jobs. 8:05 P.M.
December 4, 1936	Friday - 5:10 A.M. - Cloudy - Clear Warm. Made Coal Bin & Worked in Hen House.
December 5, 1936	Saturday - 5:30 A.M. - Clear - 30 above. Had 6 tons of Hard Coal come at $8. Worked in hen house Some. 7:50 P.M.
December 6, 1936	Sunday - 5:10 A.M. - Cloudy - South Wind. Went to Church & S.S. - Rev. F.I. Smith preached. Rev. Snyder is very ill. Beginning to Rain some. 7:55 P.M.
December 7, 1936	Monday - 5:10 A.M. - Clear 27 above. Wind came up cold - only 5 above tonight. Worked at Hen House & Packed eggs. 8:35 P.M.
December 8, 1936	Tuesday - 5:15 Clear- 2 above Zero. Clean Chicken coop- Went to Canton after feed 6200. 8:05 P.M.
December 9, 1936	Wednesday - 5:15 A.M. - Clear. Worked at Hen nests. Went down to Wilbur Johns. 8:20 P.M.
December 10, 1936	Thursday - 5:15 A.M. - Clear - Cloudy, Warm. Packed eggs. Worked at Hen House. 8:40 P.M.
December 11, 1936	Friday - 5:10 A.M. - Rained most all day - Cleaned hen House- Fixed nests. 7:45 P.M.
December 12, 1936	Saturday - 5:15 A.M. - Cloudy - Clean Brooder Houses. Buzzed Wood with Chev. East Wind. 8:05 P.M.
December 13, 1936	Sunday - 5:25 A.M. - Cloudy - 22 Above Zero. Went to Church & S.S. - Clear. Went up to Earl’s and stop and seen Elmer Welch who has his leg broke (8 P.M.)
December 14, 1936	Monday - 5:30 A.M. - Cloudy - Shod Mollie. Packed eggs 3 cases. Put Straw in Hen House. 8 P.M.
December 15, 1936	Tuesday - 5:15 A.M. - Cloudy - Cleared off. Got a load of Saw dust, and a load of wood from Tears mill. 7:35 P.M.
December 16, 1936	Wednesday - 5:20 A.M. - Clear - Had a cold. Packed eggs. 7:52 P.M.
December 17, 1936	Thursday - 5:00 A.M. - Cloudy. Had a cold and didn’t feel very well. Packed eggs 3 cases. 7:40 P.M.
