Dear Joyce: Attached is a flagmarker of the Ancient Order of United Workmen (AOUW) here in Riverside Cemetery in Albion, Michigan. The AUOW relied heavily upon Freemasonry for its rituals and symbols. The name of the organization was changed to the Pioneer Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1948 and their website is: www.pmlife.com. The shield on this marker symbolizes protection, and the anchor symbolizes hope. The local Albion Lodge No. 36 was instituted in 1885. The woman's side of this organization was called the Degree of Honor. The Albion Degree No. 2 was active here  in the 1890s and early 1900s.  --Frank Passic, Albion, Michigan Historian
