Thomas W. Fitch, of the navy engineers, was married on Thursday to Miss
Marie Ewing Sherman, daughter of Gen. Sherman, at Washington, Bishop Purcell of
Cincinnati performing the ceremony. The church was crowded.
President Grant, his Cabinet, the diplomatic corps, and distinguished army and
navy officers were present. On the road to the wedding, the horses
attached to the President’s carriage became frightened and ran away near Seventh
street and New York avenue. The carriage contained the President, Mrs.
Grant, and Marshal Sharpe and wife. None of them were injured, though the
carriage was smashed.--The President immediately hailed another team on the
street and proceeded to the church, arriving there about five minutes after the
