Hi Joyce, [June 2007]

We saw your picture of the school on the site. Going through some old pictures we found a class picture from that school about October of 1953. Ralph's family lived in the house at the bottom of the hill from the school. He sure didn't have far to walk to school. Ralph was in the third grade. Ralph went to school at Midway from 1950-1954 when it closed.

Front row: Patty Marshall, Gary Johnson, Punkey Merrill, Linda Travers, Geraldine Schultz
Back Row: Patty Schultz, Diane Clemens, Barb Merrill, Ralph Wiggins, John Owens, James Owens,
                 Bobby West
Teacher:    Mrs. Florence Wood

Ralph couldn't remember Punkey Merrill's first name. Punkey was a nickname. He saw John Owens Monday, he could only remember Punkey too. Funny when you get older things escape you for the moment.
Always glad to contribute, your site is fantastic.
Regards,
Pat & Ralph Wiggins

Octagon School in Millport
Town of Veteran School No. 8

Torn Down

Union School, Millport, N. Y. The postcard was sent in 1910.  The octagon schoolhouse had 8 grades, 2 rooms, and a basement.  The furnace in the basement heated each floor.  There was no electric or inside plumbing.  The big bell on top
was rung with a  rope on the second floor.  The school "was located between Catherine Creek and the old Chemung Canal-  facing south on Maple St.  It was torn down and replaced with a red brick school house."  With the exception of the  postcard date, the Union School information was supplied to me in 2003 by Hazel Curtis who is now deceased.   [Writeup from Dave Lenington]
