Joyce,
Am attaching a photo of the Stott Stone Quarry in Westfield, PA @1900. I was really surprised to find this card.  I knew there was a quarry in Westfield but never knew a picture existed. until I found this one.

A brief history on the Quarry is:   It was purchased by Nimrod Stott Sr and his 3 sons George, Nimrod, & Harry in 1891.  They paid  when purchased from Mrs. Octavia Streeter for the sum of $1,000, for 5 years. They paid same off in 2 years.

Stones from this quarry were used in many sidewalks and churches in the area and were shipped to other cities in the east as well. (Westfield, Wellsboro, Elmira, Rochester)

Nimrod and sons were accomplished stone masons from Brighouse, Yorkshire, England.  It is said Nimrod had worked in the quarry beginning at 8 years. old.

They came to America sometime before 1891 to look for a quarry to buy. They looked at some  in New England and probably the Rochester area before purchasing in Westfield.  After the quarry in Westfield was closed George and Nimrod and Harry went to Rochester, NY. Nimrod Sr. had died in 1897. Harry in 1912. .

Harry had no children, George had 3 daughters who married and lived in Tioga County and have descendants still here today. Nimrod had 4 sons. I believe they were in the Rochester area. Nimrod Sr. also had a daughter Lucy who married John Beach, and settled in the Austinurg, PA area.

That's enough rambling. But I would like to send this along.
Nimrod Stott was my gr gr grandfather.
Esther

Joyce:

My husband and I have just read the info on the Stott stone quarry.  The Stotts were my husband's relatives.  My husband also has Slades.  There is at least one Stott - Slade marriage.

I would be very interested in what churches in Elmira have stone on their buildings that came from the Stott quarry. I believe the Episcopal church in Westfield, PA has stone from the Stott quarry.
