"Stevensville [Presbyterian] Church was dedicated October 3, 1858.  February 2, 1860, thirty persons, members of the old Wyalusing Presbyterian Church, were organized into the Presbyterian Church of Stevensville, in which Hiram Stevens, Myron Stevens and Henry A. Ross were chosen the elders, and Rev. D. Cook was installed pastor."

Stevensville Presbyterian Church Sunday School - Bill Benson is in possession of one of the Sunday School ledgers for the Church, because it was owned by his great, great grandfather, and was passed down over time.This web page lists the two-hundred and forty-three “souls” who were part of this church over the years as found in the Sunday School “Roll” in the front of the ledger.  Mr. Benson has listed the names and also added some details from his files to this transcription.

Edward Jesse Eastabrooks was the Sunday School Superintendent at the church for many years, and two beautiful stained glass windows at the church entrance attest to the love and respect held for Edward and his wife Emeline Potter.

The Ledger begins with the minutes from the 23^rd of June 1867, and includes a Roll of Members who joined before that date, as well as new members that joined until the last entry in 1877.The ledger includes pages of minutes for each Sunday’s meeting, but most are quite similar so only a few are quoted here.

Sunday Schools were major components of the community in those days and it appears that nearly everyone who attended church, also attended the church's Sunday School.

Here is the first entry of the Sunday School Minutes from page 11:

23rd June Minutes of the weekly Sunday School in Stevensville. These being a correct record of the proceed- ing.  Written weekly by G. R. Stone.                Sec'ty In attendance 57 Minutes read and approved.

Stevensville 1867 Minutes  Meeting opened with prayer by Mr. Henry Ross. Singing. Officers and teachers in their places. Mr. E. J. Eastabrooks, Superintendent “H. A. Ross, Assistant “Lucey Stevens, Librarian “A. B. Bartlett, Treasurer “Geo. R. Stone, Secretary  School divided into seven classes. Named respectively:  Bible Class.  Mr. Hiram Stevens Class A.  Mrs. Eastabrooks   Teacher “B. “Rosa Stevens     " “C.   Mr. Regis     "            "  “   D.   Miss Lida     "            " “   E.   Mrs. Letta Stone        " “   F.   Mr. A. B. Bartlett       " After Recitations, new books distributed. Moved and supported that we take up a collection for the purposes of paying Mr. Eastabrooks the amount due him. The amount was raised and enough more to purchase a Library Register. Collection amounting to eight Dollars. Of which some six Dollars and fifty cents was paid in and received. After which singing and adjournment. G. R. Stone, Sec.

School in order early with a full attendance.     A short address by Mr. Hiram Stevens on the subject of Prayer.  Opening Prayer by E. J Eastabrooks.   Singing. Recitations.  Books distributed and accounted for on new Register. After a long session caused by the difficulty in distributing books we closed as usual with singing.  G. R. Stone, Sec.   School opened with prayer by Mr. H. A. Ross.  Singing as usual.   No business of importance transacted. Close with singing.  Doxology. Money received  0.89 On Library            .25 Penny collection    .64                       G. R. Stone, Sec.       School opened with prayer by Mr. Eastabrooks.  Singing and recitations.   No business of importance transacted.   Closed as usual.                      G. R. Stone, Sec.

21st July 1867
"Moved by Mr. Eastabrooks that Prayer meetings be closed during haying and harvest.  Motion carried."
[Attendance sixty.]

15th Nov 1867
"A short speech by Hiram Stevens concerning the Sunday school convention.  A few remarks by Eastabrooks about the next concert.  Decided to have an other one in found weeks from the last one."  [Attendance fifty.]

1st Dec 1867
"Prayer by Eastabrook.  He introduced a gift enterprise from the Editor of the Little Corporal."

29th Dec 1867
"Prayer by Eastabrook.  Moved and supported that an order be drawn on the Treasury for the Amt. of Five Dollars and five cents to pay for the Witness one year."

26th Jan 1868
"Opening prayer by Mr. Ross.  "Moved and supported that an order be drawn on the Treasury of $1.20 favor of Mr. Stevens for Question Books."  [Attendance twenty.]

16th Feb 1868
"School opened as usual.  Time employed in practicing for the Concert which takes place tonight. No lessons recited today.  Close with singing."  [Attendance twenty five.]

23 Feb 1868
"Prayer by Eastabrooks. Some of the teachers were absent today.  Address by Mr. Eastabrooks in regard to negligence on the part of teachers and pupils and church members.  He says he is quite willing to give up the position of Superintendent And thinks the concerts had better be closed unless there can be more interest taken  [etc.] and better ones gotten up."
