Mr. Andrew McIntosh
Mr. Andrew McIntosh, of Covington township, died very suddenly at the house of Mr. Henry Welch, at Blossburg, recently. (Tuesday, January 6, 1880, The Wellsboro Agitator, Wellsboro, Tioga Co, Pa.)
Mr. Wm. J. Mann
The Express says that on Friday, the 26th ultimo, at about two o’clock in the afternoon, while Mr. Wm. J. Mann, of Tioga township, was engaged in sawing wood, he was stricken with paralysis, from which he fell to the earth insensible. When discovered by his wife, perhaps half an hour afterward, the ground under him was found to be thawed, thereby showing that he had been prostrated some time. He lingered along in an unconscious condition until Sunday morning, when he died. The funeral took place on Tuesday and his remains were interred in the cemetery near the Mill creek school-house. At her residence in Chatham, December 28, 1879, Florence A., wife of Mr. J. C. Warren, and daughter of Rev. D. A. Pope, aged 18 years, 3 months and 11 days. The Advertiser says Mrs. Polly Cleveland, widow of the late Elisha Cleveland, died in Richmond township on the 7th instant, in the 78th year of her age. She was one of the pioneers of this county, and for the last few years of her life drew a pension from the Government, as the widow of a revolutionary soldier. Christopher Ludwig Lawrence
Christopher Ludwig Lawrence, who died in Williamsport recently, was a man with a record. He was a soldier under Napoleon, and was captured in Wilne while on his expedition to Moscow. There he joined the Prussians, and fought with them at Leipsie and at Waterloo. He came to this country in 1836, and had lived in Williamsport for 42 years. Daniel Searles

Mr. George W. Butler
A correspondent of the Register says Mr. George W. Butler, a ? at Morris Run, fell dead while at work on the East Mine chute last Tuesday morning. Heart disease is supposed to have caused his death. Mr. Butler moved from Cannon to Morris Run in November, 1878, and had been in poor health several months. He had a wife and three small children. George Peck

Captain W. G. Wilkinson
Captain W. G. Wilkinson, leader of the Band at the National Soldiers’ Home at Milwaukee, some time during Sunday night the 11th instant, shot and killed his wife and then killed himself. Mr. Wilson S. Bliss
The old residents of this county will regret to learn of the death of Mr. Wilson S. Bliss, which occurred at Center Point, Iowa, on the 20th of January. Mr. Bliss was for many years a resident of this borough, and in 1855 moved to Center Point where he has ever since resided. He was 67 years of age. Frank T. Dickinson
The Advocate says Mr. Frank T. Dickinson, formerly of Mitchell’s Creek, was drowned at Grand Rapids, Mich., on the 12th of January, his 27th birthday. He had an attack of typhoid pneumonia while at work in a lumber camp near Farwell, and was sent to the hospital at Grand Rapids. During his delirium he eluded his attendant, and escaping from the building jumped into a mill-race and was drowned before he could be rescued. Mr. George March, formerly of Middlebury and recently of this borough, died at the residence of his son Charles March, in this borough, last Saturday. Charles M. Beecher, Jr.
Charles M. Beecher, Jr., employed as a compositor on the Elmira Gazette, and son of Charles M. Beecher, night editor of the Advertiser, committed suicide last week Monday night by hanging himself in his father’s barn. Mr. Samuel Stratton Walker
Mr. Samuel Stratton Walker, one of the old residents of Covington township, died at the residence of Mr. L. R. Walker, at Frost Settlement, on the 12th instant. The deceased was born in New Hampshire in 1801. When Stratton, as he was called, was 12 years old his father moved his family of 12 children into the woods in Covington township, settling on the farm now owned by Charles Howland. At that time the county was pretty much a wilderness, and the settlers were forced to go either to Williamsport or Painted Post to mill, carrying their grists on a pack-horse. About the year 1827 Stratton and his brother Lewis settled in Frost Settlement on the farms now owned by L. R. and Milton Walker. Of the large family of children who came to Covington in 1813 but four are now living--Asahel Walker, now a resident of Illinois, James W. Walker, of Blossburg, Lydia, wife of Everett Bloss, of Covington, and Cynthia, wife of Moses Wheeler, living in Illinois. Stratton Walker, was afflicted with a slight lameness all his adult life, but he was nevertheless a very ambitious and effective worker. He was never married. Mr. Robbins was one of the early settlers of this township, having located here with his father at the age of 14. His life, though long, has been full of usefulness. As a citizen he has always enjoyed the respect of his fellow townsmen, as a Christian he has been loved and trusted by his brethren. The funeral of Mrs. Curry Beach, of Chatham, took place to-day at the church. Rev. Mr. Mills, of Knoxville, preached an excellent sermon, taking for his text the second verse of the third chapter of I. John. If Mr. Mills lives he will make his mark as a preacher. Mr. Henry C. Ackley, a prominent citizen of Westfield township, died suddenly at his residence between Sabinsville and Westfield about three o’clock last Friday morning. We understand that Mr. Ackley’s health had not been good of late; but that he went to bed Thursday night apparently as well as for some time past. About midnight he was found to be in a dangerous condition, and a physician was at once sent for; but notwithstanding his efforts Mr. Ackley died in about three hours, as already stated. Mr. Osman A. Pratt
Mr. Osman A. Pratt, of Mansfield, and formerly of Covington, died very suddenly at the former place on the 16th instant, at the age of 39 years. He enlisted in Company D, 11th Pa. Volunteers, August 6th, 1861, and was honorably discharged November 20th, 1862, on account of disability caused by a wound received at Antietam. His remains were buried with military honors by the General Mansfield Post of the G. A. R., of which organization he was a member. The Elmira Free Press says Mrs. Hebe Magee Ellsworth, sister of Gen. George J. Magee, of Watkins, and wife of Gen. S. S. Ellsworth of Penn Yan, died in Paris, France, on Friday afternoon, the 16th instant, at 4 o’clock. She had been afflicted for some time with an obstinate disease that even the highest physicians of Europe were unable to control. She leaves two children, both boys, to mourn the loss of a mother. Her death is a great blow to her family and especially to her brother, Gen. G. J. Magee, leaving him the sole survivor of the family of the late Hon. John Magee. Mrs. Walbridge with her husband and family, came from Somerset NJ, in 1836, and settled in Delmar, where she has since resided. Her life has been such as to command the highest esteem and love of all who knew her. In 1842 she was baptized into the Christian faith, uniting with the Baptist Church. During these 38 years she has led a faithful Christian life, has taken a lively interest in all the affairs of the Church and has been a liberal contributor to its influences. She has had a long experience in this world, and has gone to her better home "in full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in his season." In Delmar, April 29, 1880, from accidental scalding, Claude M., son of John and Alice Steele, aged 1 year and 8 days. Last Wednesday afternoon about five o’clock, a terrible accident occurred at the residence of Mr. John Steele, about two miles from this village, on the hill road to Stony Fork, resulting in the death of Mr. Steele’s little son Claude, a child but a few days over a year old. The little fellow was playing about the kitchen, and when near the stove he stumbled and fell. In his fall he threw out his hand and pulled over a teakettle of hot water that stood on the stove-hearth. The poor child was completely drenched with the boiling water, and when his clothes were removed a good share of the skin came off with them. Dr. W. W. Webb was at once sent for, and everything possible was done to help the little sufferer; but after the poor babe had lingered in agony through the night, death came to his relief at six o’clock Thursday morning. Last week Sunday, the body of Mr. Daniel Bronson, an old resident of Richmond township, was found in the woods about three miles from Mansfield and a short distance from the residence of his son, E. Bronson, with whom he lived. About a week before, the old man left his son’s house, saying that he was going to a neighbors, residing several miles away. It was afterward learned that he had not reached the neighbor’s, and a search was made and his body was found. It was evident he had hanged himself to a sapling, but the rope had broken and the body was lying on the ground. The old man was about 80 years old. No reason is known for his suicide. Last Friday forenoon, Ella, wife of Mr. Seth O. Daggett, of the Willcox House, in this borough, died after an illness of about eight weeks. Mrs. Daggett’s maiden name was Ella Boynton. She was born at Reading, Schuyler county, NY, on the 22d of December, 1861. Her father moved to Millerton in this county when she was about four years of age. She was married June 9, 1878. Mr. and Mrs. Daggett moved to this borough one year ago last June, when he assumed the control of the Willcox House. Mrs. Daggett was a woman possessed of many excellent traits of character and she was loved and respected by her circle of acquaintances. She leaves two children. Miss Fanny Howell and Mr. K. Edward Parkhurst
A terrible tragedy took place at the Nichols House, at Bath, Steuben county, NY, last Saturday afternoon. Mr. K. Edward Parkhurst, a young lawyer who had recently been graduated from Hamilton College, shot and killed Miss Fanny Howell, eldest daughter of Mr. James F. Howell, an old merchant of Bath and a highly respectable citizen. We condense the facts of the case from our Elmira and Rochester exchanges. For many years a very warm attachment had existed between young Parkhurst, who was but a little more than 23 years of age, and Miss Fanny Howell, who was one year his senior. Three or four years ago, on an excursion to Penn Yan with a number of young people from Bath, they absented themselves from the party for a few minutes and were secretly married, but returned with their friends, and for several days the fact of their marriage was not suspected by any one. The truth became known, however, and it is said that by an amicable agreement a decree was obtained from the courts setting aside the marriage. After this, to all appearances, all social intercourse between them stopped--they not even recognizing each other on the street, but since the tragedy it transpires that they have for several years been in the habit of meeting secretly, and but a few weeks ago, it is also said, they were again clandestinely married at Rochester. On Saturday afternoon last, young Parkhurst was preparing to leave Bath and take up his residence at Minneapolis, Minnesota, and as late at 3 o’clock on that day was arranging for a ticket preparatory to taking his departure at seven o’clock in the evening. A letter from Parkhurst to Miss Howell found upon her person after the tragedy, and addressed to her at Hammondsport, where she had been visiting for several days, asked her to meet him before he started for the West at the Nichols House, and designated room No. 1 for the interview, a little chamber remote from the public rooms. Miss Howell arrived in Bath from Hammondsport at 3 o’clock on Saturday afternoon and after going home returned immediately to the hotel, and seeing Parkhurst standing near the entrance, turned and looked him full in the face, and then went into the hotel. She was seen by one of the chambermaids shortly after to go alone to room No. 1 and shut the door. Parkhurst immediately followed her, entered the room and the door was then shut and locked. It is not definitely known whether they met in the parlor before going to the room or not. But just before the tragedy Parkhurst procured the pistol with which the shooting was done, and it is not known whether he went out and got the pistol after the interview commenced and before either went to room No. 1 or whether he procured it before meeting her. At all events the pistol was purchased a few minutes before the fearful tragedy occurred. The chambermaid heard the shots soon after they entered the room. She tried the door and finding it locked got a stepladder and looked over the transom and saw their bodies as they were afterward found. An alarm was given, the door was broken open and Miss Howell was found lying on a lounge in the room as if asleep. Her head was resting in an easy and natural position on her right hand, and her left hand which held a handkerchief, rested upon her side. Her eyes were closed, there was a smile upon her face, and it was evident that not a muscle moved after the fatal shot was fired. The muzzle of the pistol was evidently placed very close to, if not entirely within her ear. The body of Parkhurst lay by the side of the lounge in a pool of blood with his brains oozing from a pistol shot wound in the eye, the ball having passed through his head. In his pocket was found the following note. Rather than live separate we die together. If we have done wrong, may God have mercy on our souls. This seems to furnish a key to the whole fearful affair. They had been married and were so strongly attached to each other that the opposition to their living together had driven both to desperation. They have written letters daily to each other even when both were at home and during the few days Miss Howell was at Hammondsport. Parkhurst went there frequently. There had been no disagreement between them and they had told their friends they should marry and live together as soon as Parkhurst was established in business.--The second secret marriage, before referred to was not known to more than half a dozen persons in Bath. The truth seems to be that they preferred death to the long separation which would follow Parkhurst’s departure to the West. It is believed that the act was contemplated until about the time it took place. Young Parkhurst was a finely educated young man and possessed a brilliant intellect, giving promise of good success as a lawyer. Miss Howell was also highly accomplished, a sweet singer amicable in her character and greatly beloved by all who knew her. It is stated that young Parkhurst, who used the deadly pistol was more or less under the influence of liquor when the murder and suicide were committed. Viewed from any standpoint it is the most terribly terminated romance in the history of Bath. Coroner Goff compounded a jury at a late hour Saturday evening and after viewing the remains adjourned the inquest until 11 o’clock Monday morning and granted permission to the relatives to remove the bodies. The body of Miss Howell was taken to the home of her father on Steuben street and that of young Parkhurst to the house of Dr. Kasson(?), a distant relative of the family. On searching the body of Miss Howell a letter was found in the handwriting of Parkhurst requesting, an interview at the Nichols House on Saturday afternoon. On Parkhurst’s body was found two letters, one addressed to his uncle R.(?) F. Parkhurst and the other to his grandmother, residing at Lawrenceville, Pa. The letters were not opened but will of course be read at the inquest. On young Parkhurst’s body was also found a scrap of paper on which was written. If we cannot live together we can die together, and only God forgive us. The body of Parkhurst was to be taken to Lawrenceville, Pa., for interment and the funeral of Miss Howell will take place in Bath at 3 o’clock, this (Tuesday) afternoon.
