From a book in the Bradford County Library entitled “The Ridgebury Story and Supplement” by Gladys Burnham, 1964 is the following interesting information:
“ Charles Carroll acquired a large tract of land in the southeast part of Ridgebury from the State of Pennsylvania in 1792.  It was unbroken wilderness until 1839.
In the late 1830s a severe potato blight fell upon Ireland.  About this time soft coal was discovered on Barclay Mountain in southern Bradford Co.  So the North Branch Canal was laid out from Stoneport (Athens) to Northumberland in 1839.
The Dutchess of Leeds, the grand-daughter of Charles Carroll, lived in Leeds, Ireland.  When she heard of the need of men in America to work on this canal, she thought of the starving people around her, and did what she could to help.  So she paid the passage money for a number of families of Irish people and helped them later to buy farms from her grandfather’s tract of land in Ridgebury.  Eventually, about 100 families came.
The North Branch Canal was abandoned in 1872.”
