REMINDER - Please remain aware of the restrictions on posting our work on commercial sites that has been in effect since the site began in 1996. We are finding many violations of this, whole pages copied and pasted with no source citation or permission. These violations are usually from people who have never bothered to thank us or donate to the site's expenses. We publish it here free and available 24/7 anywhere in the world. There is no advantage to posting it on sites where people have to pay to see our free gift. It separates us from the people we help and diminshes the returns we get in exchange for our own projects. I have already had to curtail publishing many pictures I intended to. They show up without my name on them all over the place. They are not public property. We want to continue to develop this site in a trusting and honest environment without being slave labor to commercial sites. If that is not possible, we will have to find other ways to share our work. Be moral. Restrictions on Use
I have created a Tri-Counties Facebook Group page that you are welcome to join. Limit subjects to history related material. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=308807939790

03 APR Henry "Harry" C. and Frank A. Root Letters to the Wellsboro Agitator from Kansas
These letters from the Root brothers who moved from Wellsboro to Kansas tell a wonderful story of the emigrants of our area. All three Root brothers were journalists and their letters to the folks back home are good reading. They start in 1865 and continue until the 1920s. Pat NEWELL Smith deserves our thanks for all the typing she has done to make them available to us. We continue to add to them. but there are three full pages already on site to be read and enjoyed. Keep in mind that three full web pages is equivalent to over 60 hard copy pages. Also include news of other local folks who "went west." This is pure treasure.

Hi Joyce,

Your Tri-Counties site is terrific, and often the best source for obscure pictures and information about the small towns that dot Tioga & Bradford Counties.

PennDOT has historic county maps online here:
http://www.dot.state.pa.us/Internet/Bureaus/pdPlanRes.nsf/infoBPRCartoMapsinPDFandDJVU?OpenForm

Historic county maps that may interest you are

From http://www.dot.state.pa.us/Internet/Bureaus/pdPlanRes.nsf/infoBPRHistoricCountyMaps

Route numbers changed often and alignments shifted as the Department upgraded roads, and these maps help verify locations of schools, churches, etc.

Enjoy,

Matt Hamel, Regional Historian
PennDOT Districts 2-0, 3-0 & 4-0

Joyce,

I also remembered an additional source of historic maps that would also include NY: http://historical.mytopo.com/

For example, here’s a 1902 map showing Lawrence Twp. in Tioga County and others south:
